How to remove paint stains off of Slate Tiles?

QUESTION

I used paint stripper to get paint off from slate tiles. It has now left big white patches on the slate. How can the tile colour be restored?

ANSWER

ANSWER - Slate is a very dense stone, so I would not expect it to have a deep stain.  I would not expect the stripper to cause the white staining.  I would initially assume that you did not remove all of the paint.  I would test it in an inconspicuous spot by adding more paint stripper on a portion of the white stain.  Let it sit awhile per the product directions.  Use a stiff scrub brush to agitate and remove the white stain.  Beware not to scratch the slate.  After cleaning the slate, rinse the tile per the stripper instructions to remove any remnants of the stripper.

I used alcohol to try and remove paint from my slate fireplace surround. Everywhere I used it the slate turned white. How do I get it off?

Normally when I see a white cloudy look it is because there is a sealer on the stone and moisture got under it. So you need to experiment. If there is a sealer then you may need to strip it off. Ask the sealer manufacturer what to use to strip the sealer off.
